The very first….carefully typed words! A new year, I felt, called for new adventures, new excitement and a new way to communicate with our clients - our Photobooth People Family. ‘Blog’ someone whispered…Start a blog! came the cry. Okay…as a boother, I thought how hard could this be? A boother must surely be somewhat like a blogger? Every time you get in the booth there’s a new story painted by pictures, and every time you blog there’s a new story painted by words. Okay I thought, I get it. I can do it, and here it is. The Photobooth People’s blog.
Firstly, a big chipper welcome and big warm hugs to everyone who comes along to read a little, or a lot, about what we’re up to. Let me put the kettle on, or come back later and I’ll stir up the margaritas ;-)
Given the auspicious occasion of this, my very first post, I wanted to share with you all some of the wonderful thoughts of Tim Garrett, an artist and photographer from Missouri. Tim is co-creator of Photobooth.net - an awesome website that is arguably the world’s most exhaustive internet photobooth resource, and someone you should get to know if you love photobooths. If you ever wanted to know anything about photobooths, their history, or the life of a boother, you need to ask Tim. And if Tim doesn’t know the answer, than it probably isn’t worth knowing.
A few years ago Tim published a blurb about photobooths, and in particular what it was he felt, that continued to draw people to them. He posed a very good question, asking how the photobooth was still relevant in a world full of digital cameras. I loved what he had to say, and his comments still inspire me today. This is Tim’s take on it all:
“I think it is a combination of factors. The small sitting area, the lack of photographer, and the closable curtain create a private and intimate space that inspires uninhibited images. The immediacy of the process, and impeccable quality of the photos create readymade heirlooms. The affordable price-per-sitting encourages repeat visits and experimentation. In my mind however, the most fascinating characteristic of the photobooth is its intractable sense of narrative. From an early age, we are trained to connect disparate images into a related chain of events. Comic strips rely on our ability to do so. Standardised achievement tests reward us for doing so. We intuitively understand the black border between each frame signifies the passage of time. Within this void, there is movement, and when we look at a photostrip, we see a story. I like to think of each strip as the shortest film ever made… when I see a photostrip emerge from the side of the booth, I am giddy with delight. Instant art. Pure magic.”
Welcome to our blog. Stick around for a while. Put your feet up and enjoy our site. We promise you will soon fall in love with the magic that is photobooths. We did.
